Founded in the late 19th century, the Kyoto National Museum was originally a repository for sacred treasures owned by temples and shrines. Some of the most important works it houses are not owned by the museum, but are on long-term loan from such institutions. To celebrate Kyoto’s hosting of the International Council of Museums General Conference this coming September, the Kyoto National Museum has organized an exhibition showcasing specially selected masterpieces from the 6,200 works it currently houses. Included in the lineup is “Wind God and Thunder God” by Tawaraya Sotatsu (1596-1644), a set of gold screens from Kennin-ji Temple that are designated National Treasures.
